ABOUT MEDISECURE®
MediSecure® is the secure and simple e-prescription system linking doctors and pharmacies through the MediSecure® Script Vault®. With current connectivity to multiple clinical and dispense systems, MediSecure® is the leading Australian e-prescription service provider connecting more medical practices and pharmacies than any other participants.
Supported by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners [RACGP], the Australian General Practice Network [Division's peak body] and the Australian Association of Practice Managers, MediSecure® has a national footprint and meets international standards. MediSecure®believes that ETP is a doctor-led business process and doctors should choose which Prescription Exchange Service [PES] they use. Thus, compliance with the standards in general practice is critical to providing doctors with a credible, secure ETP service.
Community pharmacies have adopted the MediSecure® ETP proposition with enthusiasm since its launch in April 2009. At the end of August 2010, over 525 community pharmacies had signed Licences to use the MediSecure® ETP service. This number continues to grow with our doctor-led marketing program to engage pharmacies that are located within reach of the medical practices that hold MediSecure® clinical licences.
MediSecure® commenced commercial deployment of the e-prescription service on 23 July 2009. The MediSecure®Script Vault® is now handling e-prescriptions at an annual rate of some 12 million scripts. This rate is growing daily with the addition of new medical practices and community pharmacies. It is expected that the annual rate will exceed 20 million scripts by 30 December 2010. The MediSecure®community pharmacy dispensing capacity is already in excess of 30 million scripts per annum and growing.
MediSecure® works seamlessly in the background in medical clinics and is the first step towards paperless prescriptions. Once installed, MediSecure® prints a barcode on the doctor's paper script; the patient takes the bar-coded paper script to their pharmacy of choice; the pharmacist scans the barcode to download the script securely from the MediSecure® Script Vault®.
By downloading prescriptions, pharmacists save time and reduce data entry errors. Participating doctors are confident that their prescriptions are dispensed as prescribed and that data entry and transcription errors have been eliminated.
Doctors can elect to receive dispense notifications for MediSecure® scripts so they know the script is filled and the actual medicine dispensed. MediSecure® includes a Scripts Required workflow to manage the chronic disease and aged care prescription nightmare and ensure doctors and pharmacists communicate more effectively in this time consuming and frustrating paper-based process.
MediSecure® accepts that prescriptions are patient clinical data. Clinical data in Australia is required to be handled by IT systems that comply with HL7 standards as set out in Australian Standard 4700.3 electronic prescription messages. MediSecure® is the only e-prescription system in Australia that conforms to AS4700.3 standards and is committed to meeting all new standards introduced by NEHTA, Standards Australia and others.
