How does the Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions (ETP) help me?
The MediSecure® ETP service was launched to the Australian market on 27 March 2009. Community pharmacies took up the proposal with enthusiasm with hundreds of pharmacies signing MediSecure® Pharmacy licences in the first month.

At its simplest, the value proposition for ETP in community pharmacy is essentially economic. By downloading prescriptions from the MediSecure Script Vault®, pharmacists save time and reduce data entry errors. Pharmacists have identified that MediSecure has created an environment and service that is favourable for doctors and accordingly is being used by doctors to store the e-script. This conclusion has led many pharmacies to sign up to the MediSecure® service.

On the doctors' side, participation in ETP is a patient safety issue. Doctors that participate in the MediSecure® ETP service are confident that their prescriptions are dispensed as prescribed and that data entry and transcription errors have been eliminated [see NEJM 6 May 2010].

Doctors who use MediSecure® can elect to receive dispense notifications for MediSecure® scripts so they know the script is filled and the actual medicine dispensed by the pharmacy. This return of reliable data provides the prescribing doctor with patient management tools that show medication regime adherence. Also helps doctors to make more informed judgements when dealing with chronic disease state management and in particular to access value adding services such as Medication Management records.

MediSecure® includes a Scripts Request workflow designed to manage the chronic disease and aged care prescription inefficiencies and ensure doctors and pharmacists communicate more effectively and accurately in this time consuming and frustrating process. The administrative burden around managing the scripts associated with aged care patients is recognised as a great disincentive to taking on aged care patient management. The MediSecure program allows this script management process to be formalised and managed via the workflow software, thus reducing time and frustration for GPs and for pharmacists.
Why MediSecure®?
First, the MediSecure® technology is the only e-prescription solution that complies with Australian Standards for clinical data [AS4700.3]

Second, the MediSecure® commercial operation has a transparent governance process. The MediSecure® Advisory Board is chaired by RACGP with representatives from AAPM, AGPN, Consumer Health Forum and Royal District Nursing Service; the Advisory Board reviews a range of governance matters. Invitations to join the Advisory Board are still being considered by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia and the Australian Medical Association.

MediSecure® subscribes to and encourages interoperability with all clinical and dispense systems.

It is noted that the RACGP sets the standards in general practice, thus aligning the standard setter and the operational focus of the MediSecure e-prescription service.

Third, the MediSecure® operational stance is that prescription data is not available for any use other than the "primary purpose" as defined in the Privacy Act 1988.

Fourth, MediSecure® has invested heavily in ensuring that we have a team of people to engage directly with medical practices and pharmacists. This engagement model ensures MediSecure can communicate directly with Doctors and pharmacists in relation to the value of the e-prescription and other e-health processes, as well as providing Doctors and pharmacists with the opportunity to make an informed decision on participation in the e-prescription program.
